Buddhist amulet "Doge"

Hello.

Today I would like to write about Doge, one of ZOCALO's signature items since the brand's establishment.

Doge comes in various shapes and is said to represent masculinity in Buddhism.

The bell represents femininity.

Originally, it was introduced to Japan from ancient India, and the DogeKongoshoIt will be called.

Why did this ritual tool come to Japan?
It was brought back from the Tang Dynasty about 1,200 years ago by Kobo Daishi Kukai, the founder of the Shingon sect, along with esoteric Buddhism.
One of the esoteric Buddhism tools that Kukai brought to Japan is the Doge.

Doge also appears in Kukai's legend.
In order to find a suitable place to widely spread esoteric Buddhism, he threw a hammer from the beach of Mingzhou in the Tang Dynasty toward Japan.

And there is a legend that says that the Sankokuki jumped over the sea and got caught in a pine tree on Mt. Koya.

*This is a picture of Kukai when he discovered the Sanko pestle.

This legend is described in the book ``Kobo Daishi Gyojo Ekotoba'' as ``Sankoki Tosho''.
By the way, this Sanko pestle still exists and its name is"Flying Sanko Pestle"It is designated as an important cultural property.

The feature is that one protrusion is damaged.

So, how did this esoteric Buddhism tool come to be used as a tool?
It is said that it was originally a modified form of an ancient Indian weapon at the time of the founding of Buddhism, and after it became a Buddhist tool, it was used as a weapon to defeat worldly desires.

Also, the name of this ritual tool changes depending on the religion.
